BAT Graduate Careers

Training and Development

When you’re committed to making your mark on the world, getting the right start is crucial. That's why we developed the MT Programme. We take a constant interest in your progress, conducting regular appraisals while providing the support and resources you need to truly succeed. We always encourage our graduate management trainees to enhance their skills and knowledge by learning from both internal and external sources.

We also believe that working closely with effective role models is a vital source of inspiration and guidance, while giving you meaningful coaching and feedback which will encourage your personal development.

From the very beginning, you’re in control. During regular discussions, both your coach and your mentor will encourage you to take charge of your own development and to actively manage your career with us.

Training

Induction The induction gives you the opportunity to learn about our company, objectives, products and markets.
Functional Development Developing a foundation of excellence in the business function into which you have been recruited.
Managerial Development Developing specific managerial competencies needed in your future roles.
Business Awareness Gaining an understanding of the overall business and appreciating the role played by each function.
Performance Appraisal Giving you regular and constructive feedback, both formally (every 6 months) and informally (every 6 weeks) to ensure that you achieve the defined standards for the International Management Trainee Programme.

We believe that our programme is one of the most comprehensive around. You’ll be presented with opportunities which will stretch you to learn and be the best you can be. But more than anything, you will have the opportunity to make a difference and have a genuine, positive impact on our business from the early days of your career.

The induction process gives you the opportunity to learn about our Group objectives, products and markets. It introduces you to our guiding principles and culture, the role of each function and the industry issues in your country. It also introduces you in detail to our products and how we market them.

The International Management Trainee Programme includes your functional development – where you will develop a firm foundation of excellence in your chosen function. We will clearly explain what we expect of you. Then, with support from your coach and your mentor, you’ll set your objectives and work towards achieving them to meet the needs of the business and your personal development objectives.

You’ll develop the management skills you’ll need in your future roles with both formal training and on-the-job experience. And you’ll have the opportunity to put these skills into practice in preparation for the move into your first management role.

As an International Management Trainee we also expect you to develop real business awareness, an understanding of the overall business, and the role played by each function. In other words, we want you to understand the business beyond your own functional and geographical area of responsibility. We want you to question our existing ways of working and to bring positive change to our business. The freedom to discuss and debate is not just good for the soul, it’s good for the business. We’ll provide you with opportunities to challenge our practices, a receptive audience and the feedback you’ll need to build your knowledge.

We’ll monitor your success through regular performance appraisal. We’ll give you regular and constructive feedback, on a formal basis every 6 months and informally every 6 weeks. This ensures that you’re aware of the standards you should aim for and that we continue to tailor your development to fulfil your individual potential.

Training and Development

“There are so many ways to develop in BAT both as a personality and as professional. First, as a personality you will have to learn to work with people from different cultures and backgrounds. Secondly, as professional you will always be challenged by colleges to come up with new ideas and solutions for challenges. Nonetheless, the same co-workers are main source of company knowledge and are always happy to help.“
