
OPERATIONS
Manufacturing tobacco products is a large-scale global operation and British American Tobacco operates factories all over the world. Our Group companies produce some 715 billion cigarettes through 49 cigarette factories in 41 countries. Four of these factories, together with two separate plants, also make cigarillos, roll your own tobacco, and pipe tobacco. We also have a factory making smokeless snus.
The Operations function spans a number of key functions such as Leaf, Plan, Logistics, Product Innovation, Make, Procurement and Service. Each function is critical in ensuring that our product can be made and distributed to our customers.

In our business unit where we do not deal with the final product we see innovation as a mindset. This means actively and continually looking at our people, plant and processes to identify smarter ways of working. Sometimes we may "spend to save" on new equipment but our biggest gains come from developing our people and processes to increase our productivity and value to our customers. Ultimately it is our people that make the difference.
In Operations, customers are at the heart of our business. Our customer service is driven by truly understanding the motivating factors of our customers. This usually centres around cost, quality and service. We will engage directly with our customers to explore value adding initiatives. As an example we are working with St Petersburg on a project to reduce their transport costs and if successful this would be rolled out to the rest of Europe.
One of our biggest challenges is to both maintain the momentum and keep raising the performance bar. We must not stand still and rest on our laurels but stay on the never ending journey of continuous improvement. Maybe an overused phrase but something that has to be in the lifeblood of our organisation.
